Heroku runs dynos in Cedar Common Runtime, Cedar or Fir Private Spaces, and Cedar-only Shield Spaces. Cedar can peer with your AWS VPC, but dynos remain on Heroku infrastructure, so peering is not BYOC.
Northflank offers three models through one application control plane. Northflank Cloud is the managed option. With Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC), Northflank provisions and manages a new Kubernetes cluster in your cloud account. With Bring Your Own Kubernetes (BYOK), Northflank connects an eligible existing cluster.
Northflank production BYOC, supported since 2019, covers AWS, GCP, Azure, Civo, Oracle Cloud, CoreWeave, and Nebius. Northflank BYOK can use eligible public-cloud, on-premises, or bare-metal Kubernetes, but requires a preferably dedicated cluster with compatible networking, storage, DNS, load balancing, and minimum capacity.
A Northflank BYOC or BYOK cluster requires at least 12 vCPU and 24 GB in total. Northflank BYOC supports a minimum of one node, while BYOK requires at least three nodes; each node must provide at least 4 vCPU and 8 GB of memory.
With Northflank BYOC, your organisation owns the account, bill, commitments, capacity, and cloud controls; Northflank manages the provisioned cluster and application platform.
Heroku Review Apps can be created automatically or manually from GitHub pull requests and require Pipelines plus GitHub integration. Eligible add-ons and dynos receive normal charges, and Fir lacks predictable Review App URLs.
Northflank Preview Blueprints automatically create multi-resource preview environments from pull requests or branch pushes, including frontend and backend services, databases, jobs, volumes, secrets, private networking, seed or restore workflows, and unique URLs. Configurable cleanup can remove previews when pull requests close or merge.
Heroku's Cedar and Fir Private Spaces provide isolated networking and stable outbound IPs. Internal routing, DNS service discovery, AWS VPC peering, IPSec VPN, and Shield Spaces remain Cedar-only.
Northflank provides private networking across workloads and data services, with isolated projects, cross-project ingress, network policies, secure external access, and BYOC VPC placement.
Heroku scales by dyno size and process-type count. Performance, Private, and Shield Cedar web dynos can autoscale using response-time and throughput behaviour; Fir autoscaling is not currently available.
Northflank lets teams set instance counts, choose CPU and memory, or autoscale deployments using CPU, memory, requests per second, or custom Prometheus metrics. BYOC adds custom resource plans, spot nodes, workload affinity, separate build capacity, node-pool scaling, and placement controls.
Heroku aggregates application, system, router, API, and eligible add-on runtime logs; build logs are separate. Cedar provides a bounded Logplex buffer, while Fir has no log history. Durable retention requires an add-on or drain.
Heroku application metrics are unavailable on Eco dynos. Basic dynos provide 24 hours of metrics at 10-minute resolution, while other eligible dyno tiers provide longer history and finer resolution. Heroku's Fir generation integrates OpenTelemetry and Telemetry Drains.
Northflank provides live and historical logs for builds, services, jobs, and addons, alongside resource metrics for monitoring workload performance. Teams can configure health checks and infrastructure alerts, review scoped activity through audit logs, and export logs to external systems using log sinks. In Northflank BYOC, the same control plane also provides visibility into clusters and node pools, connecting application-level signals with the infrastructure running those workloads.
Heroku centralises runtime operations. Northflank can extend the application control plane into customer-controlled cloud or Kubernetes infrastructure.
Heroku Enterprise provides accounts and teams, SSO, mandatory MFA, app permissions, Private Spaces, Cedar-only Shield controls, and monthly audit exports. Shield Spaces remain Cedar-only, and Heroku lists HIPAA compliance for Fir as forthcoming. Buyers should confirm the current compliance scope before using Fir for regulated workloads.
These capabilities do not mean a new Enterprise Account contract is available. Heroku stopped offering those contracts to new customers in February 2026; existing Enterprise subscriptions and support contracts remain supported and can renew. New buyers can still use Heroku through credit-card billing, but teams that require a negotiated enterprise contract should treat contract availability as a decision constraint.

Basic is prorated up to $7 per dyno monthly; Standard-1X up to $25. Data services, add-ons, CI, and Private or Shield resources add costs. Review Apps and one-off dynos consume normal resources. Heroku operates the runtime.
- Northflank Cloud: The free, always-on Sandbox includes two services, one database, and two cron jobs. Pay-as-you-go has no seat fees, meters resources by the second, and currently lists $0.01667 per vCPU-hour, $0.00833 per GB-hour, $0.15 per GB-month of SSD storage, and $0.06 per GB of egress. Enterprise pricing is custom and can include commitments, SLAs, 24/7 support, and onboarding.
- Northflank BYOC: Your cloud provider bills the underlying infrastructure directly, while Northflank currently charges $0.01389 per vCPU-hour, $0.00139 per GB-hour, and $0.00278 per GB of GPU VRAM-hour. Direct billing preserves applicable cloud credits, reservations, commitments, negotiated rates, and customer capacity choices. Include minimum cluster capacity and retained cloud-account responsibilities in the total cost.
- Total cost: Model workloads, data, builds, previews, transfer, support, cluster minimums, and engineering time. Northflank may reduce cost when granular allocation, spot capacity, or direct billing outweigh retained responsibility.
